I apologize in advance for the picture quality, I just took a couple of quick snapshots with my phone, but I just wanted to share with you the 3D pumpkin carving I did at yesterday’s art show. Inspired by Rick Bakers awesome “Popeye”.
It is definitely not done (there were still lots of details/wrinkles to add to the face and minor proportion tweaks) but after 6 straight hours I had to call it a day and go sell some of my painted feathers!
I decided to add the “pipe” (yes, that is all carved pumpkin) last minute and the only thing I managed to scrounge up to hold it in place were toothpicks and they worked surprisingly well. Although, word of caution – I still don’t recommend them for holding pumpkin extremities in place for the long term – since they are a porous wood they absorb lots of the pumpkins moisture and get soggy after a few hours. But as a temporary fix, they worked great.
I had so much fun doing this pumpkin carving demonstration, and I’d have to say my favorite part was seeing how all the small kids got so excited over it (but on that note, I guess there were a few adults like that too! :-)). Anyway, it was done all in good fun and I hope everyone enjoys it!
Happy Halloween!
